Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS THE GOING DAILY/WEEKLY RATE?
BECTU has a pay rates guide on their website showing how much make-up and hair freelancers of all levels should be getting paid.
HOW DO I GET WORK EXPERIENCE?
With regard to unpaid experience, the law does not take kindly to companies using people as free labour and, generally, if you are on a production doing a job then you must be paid the National Minimum Wage (even if you would gladly work for free). If you are offered unpaid work experience as part of a fulltime training course (not after the course has finished!), then this is generally acceptable. For more specific help and information regarding any work experience you have been offered, talk to the National Minimum Wage helpline on 0845 6000 678. It is free and confidential.
*************** Getting work experience is not always easy - there are a lot of people doing courses and not enough placements to go round.
WHO RUNS THE BEST MAKE-UP COURSES?
As an association we cannot endorse any school or college course. Do some research into courses available, the costs involved, talk to former students and look at the tutors - what have they done in the industry? Go to open days or arrange to visit the colleges - this can give you an insight too. Skillset can provide information on course providers.
